PROJECT SENYAS

Basic Filipino Sign Language Workshop

SENYAS is a high-impact initiative now in its third year of fostering inclusivity and bridging communication gaps. Hosted by the Rotaract Club of PUP San Juan, this year’s event was a massive collaborative effort co-hosted by a coalition of Rotaract clubs, including San Juan, San Juan East, San Juan Supreme, Mandaluyong North, Mandaluyong West, East Rizal, Central Pampanga Lantern Leaders, Barasoain, Antipolo, Pleasant Hills, and Metro East Taytay. By uniting these diverse chapters, the project successfully amplified its mission to promote accessibility and Deaf culture awareness across the community.

Led by esteemed resource speaker Ms. Veronica Fe Gigantone, the workshop introduced participants to the fundamentals of Filipino Sign Language through interactive discussions and hands-on practice. While initially designed for education students, the program expanded this year to include students from all academic programs, empowering a diverse group of future leaders to become inclusive communicators. Participants practiced essential signs for greetings and common expressions, learning that meaningful connection thrives through empathy and expression.

The long-term impact of SENYAS is anchored in its replicable format and the creation of a campus-wide culture of inclusivity. By equipping attendees with practical communication skills, the initiative ensures that its benefits extend into personal, academic, and professional settings long after the event. This successful partnership between the host club, co-hosting Rotaract partners, and supporting organizations like the Rotary Clubs of San Juan Neopolitan and Marikina Royale demonstrates the power of collective action in building a more understanding world.
